“Kiss With a Fist” is Florence + the Machine’s dehowever single. The violence she sings about is not a situation of domestic abuse – it’s a metaphor for the strength of her and her lover’s passion.
The lyrics initially came from Ashok’s “Happy Slap”, which she sang for the band’s sole record. Also, Florence has compared this song to Leona Lewis‘ “Bleeding Love”.
Welch told the story of the song in an interview through QMI Agency:
It was such a long time ago that I wrote it,“ she said. "I was 17. I was hanging out via the majority of punk band also <…> And I guess I just wanted to compose, like, not your typical love song. I was simply messing roughly, and also someone was playing this kind of nation, bluesy riff, and I simply sang it. And the first time I sang it, it simply came into my head once I was doing an open-mic session. And I just got on this riff, and also then I wrote the remainder of the song. It wasn’t about individual suffer. A lot of the stuff I compose about is imaginary relationships and also, prefer, imagining chaos.”
In an interwatch with Uncut magazine January 2010, it was suggested that Welch is saying in this song that being bconsumed up by your man is much better than being ignored by him. She responded:
I want to make it clear that a male has actually never beaten me up and also I would certainly never advocate that in a song in any type of means whatsoever. Tright here are no victims in that song. They’re both beating the s–t out one another, there’s no victimisation in it. The song is describing a highly destructive connection, however one which both partners enjoy. But it’s all metaphorical."
