Originally released on the 2016 Not the Actual Events EP, the song was created for Reznor’s friend (and at some point collaborator) David Lynch’s 2017 tv series Twin Peaks: The Return. The band—billed as “The Nine Inch Nails”—performed the song on the eighth episode of the series, which originally aired June 25, 2017.

In a radio interview, Trent Reznor and also Atticus Ross revealed that “She’s Gone Away” was their second stab at composing a song for David Lynch’s Twin Peaks: The Return:

Trent Reznor: Actually we composed a different song initially, sassist, ‘How about somepoint much less Twin Peaks–y sounding, and more aggressive and also ugly.Atticus Ross: I think he shelp, ‘Make my hair stand also on finish,’” Ross added.
