This may well be because Lily and James were some of Dumbledore"s many powerful and also avid supporters and integral members of the Order of the Phoenix. So the greatest threat to V-Voldemort and his Order.

You are watching: Why did voldemort want to kill harry potter

But why go with all the activities of murdering a whole household, even though they are cooped up in a covert house and posing no instant danger?

References preferred. But justified conjecture is likewise welcome.

Edit:I wrote this simply after reading that Neville broke the prophecy. So I assumed it could never be answered, which is why I asked the question.I currently recognize the complete factor.

There was this prophecy:

Sybill Trelawney"s first prophecy, periodically ssuggest recognized as The Prophecy, describes the prophecy made by Sybill Trelawney to Albus Dumbledore at the Hog"s Head Pub in 1980. It referred to a boy born at the finish of July, who has actually the power to defeat Lord Voldemort (which Voldemort took to expect Harry Potter) and Lord Voldemort himself.

In what showed to be a vain attempt to circumvent a prophecy that a boy born at the end of July of 1980 could be able to defeat him, Voldemort attempted to murder him as soon as he was a year and 3 months old, quickly after murdering Harry"s parental fees as they tried to defend him.

Voldemort feared that Harry was the one the prophecy was talking around, because he was born at the end of July. That"s why he wanted to kill him. Harry"s parents were "just in the way". Voldemort eliminated them because they were trying to protect Harry

Here is the specific prophecy:

The one via the power to vanquish the Dark Lord approaches ... born to those who have thrice defied him, born as the seventh month dies ... and the Dark Lord will certainly mark him as his equal, however he will have power the Dark Lord knows not ... and also either have to die at the hand of the other for neither deserve to live while the various other survives ... the one with the power to vanquish the Dark Lord will certainly be born as the seventh month dies ...
