Don"t look for a dominance for prepositions, tbelow is none. It is simply exactly how we speak.

You are watching: When to use a before a verb in spanish

In English:

Why perform I look for things, yet look for them, why not look things but look for for them.

Why perform I look at points however check out them- why not look things but check out at them.

Why carry out I listen to things but hear them, why not listen things and hear to them.

Spanish is equally difficult. Certain prepositions are just necessary with particular verbs to offer them the definition you are looking for.

It is the method it is. "Ir a".

You of course asked why it was ir a jugar, not why it was jugar al fútbol, which might provide a small different spin, however not sufficient to have me put it in. It is exactly how it is.

The crucial is not in jugar it is in ir. Grammatically particular verbs need a preposition (occasionally a) after them if they are offered in connection via an infinitive.

English examples would certainly include: going to do (something), beginning to learn, discovering to stop, wanting to leave, and so on All the second nouns are infinitives in English which indicates the word "to" is part of the infinitive not the coming before verb. The totality building is speak to verbal periphrasis.

There is a totality list of Spanish verbs that take a preposition on this site in the Grammar. Here is a straight attach to it:

Verbal periphrasis

So that is why you will see a (or en, de, que, or por) prior to some infinitives.

Thank you old friend , I have actually posted that reference for all to check out . - ray76, DIC 28, 2015

We have the right to say: "Me gusta jugar", yet we have to say"Me gusta ir al parque" bereason the A in this case provides direction of activity as in going where? Going to the park. I am sure tbelow is a much better grammatical explacountry of this, but it has actually escaped me.

Okay mate the letter "a" in Spanish suggests "to" so it would be:

Without "a" It means: I prefer to go to the Park play footsphere (or soccer)

if you encompass "a" It means: I like to go to the Park to play footsphere (or soccer).

So basically you add them to direct what you or something is doing.

Hope this helps you out mate.

What around this sentence, "Quiero jugar un particarry out." We dont require "a" below and also it still converts generally definition "I desire to play a game." - nickmarks10, DIC 28, 2015
Well I would certainly say bereason it is not being directed towards anything in general ,choose as soon as you sassist "I prefer to go to the park" you are directing it to the park. But once you say I desire to play a game, you aren't being specific with what you are directing it - Nickelbackfan1, DIC 28, 2015
to yet I am not fluent nor carry out I recognize the language exceptionally well however it is something my teacher taught me about a week earlier. - Nickelbackfan1, DIC 28, 2015
