I don’t think a single “newer” translation of the Bible offers the exact same word, “variance,” as does the King James Version. Not in Galatians 5:20, or everywhere else that I deserve to discover.
You are watching: What does variance mean in the bible
“Now the works of the flesh are manifest, which are these; Adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lasciviousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, VARIANCE, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies” … and also the list goes on!
The Greek noun right here translated “variance” is “eris.” In truth, this is the ONLY TIME the King James translators employ this particular definition for “eris.” Four times they usage “strife.” Twice they let it mean “dispute.” And 2 even more times “contention!” (I believe they did not desire the Scriptures to seem also repetitious.)
So then, what is “variance?”
By the method, the synonyms provided above pretty well specify “eris,” don’t they?
Hence, the King James Bible just came to be a pretty good commentary on the King James Bible! And the more recent translations execute NOT always carry out that, either!
“Eris” suggests “wrangling,” among other points. “Fussing and fighting,” we can say.
“A controversial temper,” claims one commentary I consulted. (This fits well with a sin Paul assumed the Galatians can still be practicing, based upon Galatians 5:15. “But if ye bite and also devour one an additional, take heed that ye be not consumed among another.”)
Astoundingly, according to Philippians 1:15, also created by Paul … “Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife (“eris”).” Probably still “sound” doctrine and also “wholesome” preaching (or else Paul would certainly have sternly condemned it on the spot) … yet still with poor attitudes!
Some primitive Greek thinkers actually taught that “eris” (“variance”) was a goddess, however a wicked one! A “demon,” they could also admit! But then (using their twisted, darkened minds) they reasoned that “eris” was important, or “peace” would certainly no longer be hosted in such high esteem!
How’s that for “foolishness?”
Yes, “variance” existed wholesale in the (secular) Greek/Roman people of Paul’s day. It simply was a fact of life. Everyone accepted that grim reality. Just “humale nature,” no doubt … impossible to change.
But, shame on us, Paul provides the noun a majority of times as soon as describing “Church life!” Particularly of the Corinthians, in the New Testament!
See both 1 Corinthians 1:11 and 3:3 and then look at 2 Corinthians 12:20.

1 Corinthians 1:11 … “For it hath been claimed unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the home of Chloe, that tright here are CONTENTIONS (“eris”) among you.”
1 Corinthians 3:3 … “For ye are yet carnal: for whereas tbelow is just one of you envying, and also STRIFE (“eris”), and also divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?”
2 Corinthians 12:20 … “For I fear, lest, when I come, I shall not discover you such as I would, and that I shall be uncovered unto you such as ye would not: lest tright here be DEBATES (“eris”), envyings, wraths, strifes, backbitings, whisperings, swellings, tumults.”
What’s the solution to this rivalry, dissention, disputing, quarreling? I tbelow is a solution? Can calm peace ever before power in a human situation?
The fulness and also fruit of God the Divine Spirit, operating freely in the lives of us Christians! He is the Solution!
