A citrus fruit that is round and oarray in shade. Sometimes it is a bonus prize as in the Pac-Man series of games. Also comes in the develop of juice and also soda.
You are watching: How many syllables in the word orange
I newly disagreed with my sister about exactly how many syllables are in the word “oarray.” I sassist one, she sassist 2, so I looked it up in the dictionary. At initially I assumed she was ideal, because the enattempt in bold was or·ange. However, I check out the explanatory notes in the beginning of the dictionary, and they said that the entry word just shows how the word is hyphenated, not necessarily exactly how many type of syllables are in it.
Then I looked at the pronunciation. Tbelow are 6 means.
Pronunciation: är-inj, är(-ə)nj; chiefly Northern & Midland ȯr-inj, ȯr(-ə)nj
How are tright here six? Well, the (-ə) is pronounced by some world, however omitted by others. So the answer is oarray deserve to have actually one or 2 syllables. I pronounce it /ȯrnj/.

I supplied the wrong word. Instead of saying "hyphenated," I should"ve said the enattempt word in the dictionary had actually an "end-of-line division" between "or" and "ange." End-of-line divisions and also pronunciations don"t constantly coincide. The dictionary offers the instance of the word "metric." hyphenation: ˈme-trik end-of-line division: met·ric Edit: Oh, so to conclude, I will certainly concede that no word would have an end-of-line diviboy in it if it couldn"t be pronounced as 2 syllables. But since oarray can be pronounced as either one or two syllables, oselection is a one syllable word that has an end-of-line department in it.11 years ago

Definetely 2. If you save saying it as one syllable, you might be enduring from the some mild lazy-english language defect that reasons civilization to mix syllables (or also words) together, similar to when world use words prefer "kinda" or "sorta", or to a even more excessive, "y"all".

I still do not understand also just how it can be 1 syllable. I just see no way you could pronounce it that way. Record yourself saying it or somepoint.

Always held to be one syllable. I remember they talk about it a lot in English Lit classes as poets hold it as among those rare words with no rhymes for it. Even though we obviously pronounce it as 2 sylable that does not mean it isn"t one by the strict interpretation. Just gain any Amerihave the right to (and a variety of English people) to pronounce Worcester (as in Sauce) and also count the syllables.
